(Old Garden Roses)

1867 was a landmark year for the rose family (Rosaceae). In 1966, the American Rose Society classified roses that existed before 1867 as “Old Garden Roses”, which are also known as Antique Roses, Old Roses or Heirloom Roses.

Old Roses come with a wide range of bloom shapes, such as quartered, rosette flat, pompon, cupped, and globular. The blooms may be loose and unrestricted or have overlapping petals. Their natural plant shapes lend Old Roses a sophisticated elegance that modern roses can never rival.

The rich floral fragrance of the Old Rose is another characteristic that makes them so attractive. The fragrance can spread through a garden to an extent that visitors will find astonishing. People in Bulgaria, Turkey, and Morocco have been extracting essential oil from the petals of the Damask Rose (Rosa damascena) for over three hundred years. Outside Taiwan, many Old Roses only bloom once a year in spring but produce abundant fruits that turn red in autumn, bringing splashes of color and beauty to the garden.
